Log books kept by Rivers while he was working for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Charleston District. The first volume (1920-1924), titled "Log Book, Survey Cooper River, S.C.," records daily activities including surveying, sounding, and dredging mainly on the Cooper River (in or near Charleston, S.C.), but also waterways near Georgetown, S.C. The second volume (1924-1927) continues the log of Rivers' work and supervisory activities mainly concerning Georgetown County waters, but also the Ashley River, and other waterways. Related clippings and transcriptions are pasted in the second volume. The third volume (1927-1938) includes entries concerning Civil War-era vessels which a dredger and a tanker came across, beginning on 10 May 1929. Additional entries about the wrecks are found on 10 July and 31 July 1929 and 1 to 6 Aug. 1929, with scattered notes about those wrecks and other vessels later in the volume. Also included is a photocopy of handwritten notes (undated) by Rivers concerning the wrecks (which included ironclads) and the artifacts removed from them.
